Diani Coast

Kenya's finest beach — 17 km of white sand, Kisite Marine Park dolphins, and colobus monkeys in coastal forest.

Overview

About Diani Coast

Diani Beach stretches for 17 kilometres along Kenya's southern coast, approximately 30 kilometres south of Mombasa, and is consistently rated as one of the finest beach destinations in the Western Indian Ocean. The beach's powder-white coral sand, fringed by leaning coconut palms and backed by a coral-rag forest that shelters the endemic Angolan black-and-white colobus monkey, creates a tropical setting of extraordinary beauty. The warm, turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean are protected by a fringing coral reef that creates a calm lagoon ideal for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Beyond the reef, the deeper waters offer world-class scuba diving and snorkelling on sites including the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park — Kenya's premier marine reserve, protecting coral gardens, sea turtles, bottlenose and humpback dolphins, and seasonal whale shark encounters. The nearby Shimba Hills National Reserve, a coastal rainforest just 30 minutes from Diani, provides a unique bush-and-beach combination where sable antelope, elephant, and leopard can be observed against a backdrop of Indian Ocean views. Diani has evolved from a backpacker haunt into a sophisticated beach destination with luxury resorts, boutique hotels, excellent restaurants, and a lively but not overwhelming social scene. Deep-sea fishing, kite surfing, traditional dhow sailing, and visits to the 16th-century Kongo Mosque ruins add variety beyond the beach. Diani is the natural post-safari beach extension for travellers completing a Masai Mara, Amboseli, or Tsavo safari, connected by direct flights from Nairobi and the Mara.
