Gorilla Trekking

Volcanoes National Park has 12 habituated gorilla families available for daily visits — 96 permits per day maximum. Each group of 8 trekkers spends exactly one hour with a gorilla family after a hike of 1–6 hours through bamboo forest at 2,500–3,700m altitude.

Permits cost $1,500 per person and must be booked through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or an authorized operator. Peak season (June–September, December–February) sells out 6–12 months ahead. The permit price has been stable since 2017 and includes park entry. Success rate for finding gorillas is 99%+.

Beyond Gorillas

Akagera National Park (1,122 km²) in eastern Rwanda was rewrestored to Big Five status in 2017 with the reintroduction of lions and black rhinos. It's now one of Africa's great conservation success stories with rising wildlife numbers. Game drives, night drives, and boat safaris on Lake Ihema are available.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa's oldest montane rainforests. It hosts 13 primate species including habituated chimpanzees ($150 permit), 300+ bird species, and Africa's only canopy walkway suspended 50m above the forest floor. It also has golden monkeys ($100 permit) as does Volcanoes NP.

How far in advance should I book gorilla permits?

Book 6–12 months ahead for peak season (June–September, December–February). Shoulder months (March, May, October, November) may have availability 2–3 months out. Permits are non-refundable but can be rescheduled with 15+ days notice.

Is gorilla trekking difficult?

Treks range from 1–6 hours of hiking at 2,500–3,700m altitude through bamboo forest and sometimes steep, muddy terrain. Moderate fitness is recommended. Porters are available for $20 and highly recommended. There is no age minimum but trekkers must be 15+.

Rwanda vs Uganda for gorilla trekking?

Rwanda's permit costs $1,500 vs Uganda's $700. Rwanda offers easier logistics (2.5 hours from Kigali), more habituated families, and better infrastructure. Uganda offers cheaper permits, longer trekking experiences in Bwindi's thicker forest, and the option to combine with other wildlife parks.
