Overview

About this journey

The Shira Route is the original western approach to Kilimanjaro — trekkers drive up to the Shira Gate area, skipping much of the lower rainforest and starting the trek already on the high-altitude moorland. From there the route crosses the vast, other-worldly Shira Plateau, a collapsed volcanic caldera, before joining the Southern Circuit near Lava Tower and following the same proven summit path as Lemosho via Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu. This 7-day budget camping itinerary builds in a full acclimatization day for a strong summit success rate, with remote, uncrowded trekking through some of the mountain's most dramatic high-altitude scenery.
