Rwanda Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trek

About this journey
Rwanda is Africa's most surprising destination — compact, pristine, and home to experiences found nowhere else on Earth. This five-day luxury journey brings you face to face with endangered mountain gorillas in the mist-shrouded bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park, where fewer than 1,000 individuals survive. Trek with expert trackers who have followed these families for decades, then spend one life-changing hour in the presence of silverbacks, mothers with infants, and playful juveniles. Add the rare golden monkey trek — a flash of orange fur leaping through bamboo — and the vertigo-inducing canopy walkway at Nyungwe Forest, suspended 50 metres above ancient montane rainforest. Stay at Bisate Lodge, a conservation-driven retreat with volcano-view rooms designed to echo traditional Rwandan royal architecture, and One&Only Gorilla's Nest, where luxury villas are tucked into a eucalyptus plantation at the base of the Virunga volcanoes. Rwanda's 'Land of a Thousand Hills' delivers extraordinary landscapes between every experience.
Day by day
Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial — a powerful experience that contextualises Rwanda's extraordinary rebirth. Lunch at a rooftop restaurant overlooking the city's immaculate streets and red-tile rooftops. Transfer northwest through terraced hillsides to Volcanoes National Park. Check into Bisate Lodge, a striking property where thatched villas echo traditional Rwandan royal architecture, each with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Virunga volcanoes. Dinner featuring Rwandan-inspired cuisine.

The day you have waited for. After an early breakfast, drive to park headquarters for the pre-trek briefing and group assignment. Each gorilla family has its own territory and personality — your trackers have been with these families for decades. The trek ranges from one to four hours through bamboo forest and volcanic terrain at 2,500–3,000 metres altitude. When you find the gorillas, the world stops. Spend one extraordinary hour among silverbacks, nursing mothers, and juveniles at play. Return to Bisate Lodge for a celebration lunch and an afternoon of reflection.

Walk the canopy trail — a suspension bridge 50 metres above the forest floor, swaying gently as colobus monkeys swing through the treetops and rare bird calls echo below. The forest is home to 13 primate species and over 300 bird species. After the canopy experience, enjoy a guided forest walk with a botanist.
