Uganda Primates & Wilderness

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport on the shores of Lake Victoria. Fly to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse forests on Earth. The flight over western Uganda reveals a patchwork of tea plantations, volcanic crater lakes, and misty mountains. Check into Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, where luxury tents sit within the gorilla habitat itself — gorillas have been known to wander through camp. Evening briefing over dinner.

After an early breakfast, report to the park headquarters for the pre-trek briefing. Your group of eight trekkers is assigned a habituated gorilla family and led by expert trackers who have followed these families for years. The trek takes one to five hours through dense vegetation — tangled vines, bamboo thickets, and moss-covered trees. When you find the gorillas, time stops. Spend one hour observing silverbacks weighing over 200kg, mothers nursing infants, and juveniles wrestling in the undergrowth. Return to camp for a celebration lunch and afternoon at leisure.

Drive north through the Albertine Rift to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Stop at the Ishasha sector, famous for its tree-climbing lions — one of only two populations in Africa that regularly climb fig trees to escape the heat and survey their territory. Search the canopy for tawny shapes draped across branches. Continue to Mweya Safari Lodge, set on a dramatic peninsula between Lake Edward and the Kazinga Channel. Afternoon game drive through the Kasenyi plains, watching for Uganda kob herds and their attendant predators.

Morning boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel — a natural waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George. The channel's banks are lined with hippos, elephants drinking and bathing, buffalo herds, and an extraordinary density of waterbirds including African fish eagles, goliath herons, and pied kingfishers. After lunch, drive through the explosion crater region — over 30 volcanic craters filled with turquoise and emerald lakes. Evening game drive as predators emerge at dusk.

Drive north to Kibale National Park, home to the highest density of primates in Africa — 13 species in a single forest. The journey passes through the tea-carpeted Fort Portal highlands with views of the Rwenzori Mountains, the legendary 'Mountains of the Moon.' Check into Primate Lodge, nestled at the forest edge. Afternoon forest walk with a naturalist, spotting red colobus monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

Join the dawn chimpanzee tracking experience. Enter the forest with experienced trackers who locate the chimps by their calls and the sound of fig branches breaking overhead. When you find them, observe their complex social dynamics — grooming sessions, territorial displays, hunting parties, and the loud pant-hoot calls that echo through the canopy. Chimps share 98.7% of our DNA, and their intelligence and emotion are unmistakable. Afternoon visit to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for exceptional birdwatching and community-based conservation.

Morning drive or flight back to Entebbe. If time permits, visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre or the Botanical Gardens on the shores of Lake Victoria. Transfer to Entebbe Airport for your international departure. You leave Uganda having encountered two of humanity's closest primate relatives in their natural habitat — an experience available in only a handful of places on Earth.
